A lot of us went straight from a childhood where safety was not guaranteed into an adulthood where we assumed it never would be. So we got competent instead. We got impressive. We built whole careers on being the person who holds everything, and we never noticed that we had quietly agreed to go without.

This week I sit with Dr. Della Mosley, a counseling psychologist who has spent her career building healing ecosystems for Black, queer, and trans folks, and who had to go find safety for herself in adulthood, on purpose, as an adult project with a cost attached. That work took her back to her own parents and into the conversations most of us spend decades avoiding. She held them accountable. She stayed at the table. And what came back to her on the other side of that is the part almost nobody tells you about.

This is two clinicians talking honestly about the thing our training does not fix. Accountability is not the same as estrangement, and repair is not the same as pretending. Sometimes the reward for saying the hard true thing is a relationship you could not have had otherwise.

try this week

one thing to
try this week.

Name one place in your life where you are tolerating something because you learned early that safety was optional. Do not fix it this week. Just name it out loud to one person and let it be true.
